Photoshop's hidden secret, quick mask. Here's how to use it.If you have spent anytime in this massive program, you know how overwhelming it can be. I think this may be why purchasing actions is so popular. Let someone else figure it out, then pay for their knowledge. My science background makes me want to do it myself. I have to prove it works before I can comfortably take it on as fact. I know this DOES create more work, however, I am confident about what I believe. Also, I get to use that money for other fun toys instead.

In walks the dashing Damien Symonds. If you are around the photography world very long, you will probably hear this name, or better known as just “Damien”. If you use Photoshop at all, you must take his classes and join the cult! While he doesn’t know much about photography, he is a whiz with Photoshop. He even has a group on Facebook where he gives away his knowledge for free.

Now that credit is given, let me tell you the secret, quick mask. I am sure most haven’t heard this term. That’s what I’m here for. This little button looks like a camera just under your foreground/background colors on the bottom left.

1. Click it to turn it on

2. Select a big soft brush (for photos you want the feathering, a harsh edge will look off)

3. Start painting on the area you want to make a specific adjustment. It will turn red unless you have chosen a different color. I have chosen green. I also erased that little area between her arm. I want to brighten her but not the background.Photoshop's hidden secret, quick mask. Here's how to use it.

4. Unclick the quick mask icon. The marching ants should appear around your selection (it won’t be exact because the brush was so soft but it did select the whole area)

6. Make the adjustments and watch it change on your photo in real time.

For me, this was a game changer and confidence builder. I can make individual adjustments lickety split. It takes me more time to figure out what I want to do than it does to actually do it!

Is your life changed? Mine was! Now, go take his classes! (no monetary gain for me they are that awesome)

I am a wife and mother, creator, dreamer, and memory maker.
